Azerbaijan Begins Gas Exports to Germany as SOCAR Signs Decade-Long Supply Deal with SEFE

Azerbaijan has formally entered Europe's largest natural gas market after SOCAR — the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic — and Germany's SEFE (Securing Energy for Europe) signed a 10-year gas supply agreement covering volumes that will ramp up to approximately 1.5 billion cubic metres annually at full capacity. The deal represents a significant commercial milestone for Baku and a meaningful step toward Germany's ambition to diversify its gas supply portfolio following its forced exit from Russian imports.

The agreement calls for gas deliveries to commence immediately, with volumes gradually increasing year-on-year as Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz and associated fields ramp up production. SOCAR has committed to investing in upstream infrastructure — including gas compressors at Shah Deniz — to ensure sustainable supply levels over the contract's 10-year life. SEFE, which was formerly Gazprom's German subsidiary before being nationalised by Berlin in 2022, will handle downstream distribution and marketing within the German market.

Germany consumed approximately 84 billion cubic metres of natural gas in 2025, making it by far the largest single gas market in the European Union. Despite significant progress in reducing consumption through efficiency improvements and renewables deployment, Germany continues to require substantial pipeline gas imports for industrial heating, power backup, and chemical feedstock applications. The SOCAR deal will supply roughly 1.8% of Germany's total gas demand at full ramp-up — a modest share, but symbolically important as Azerbaijan's first direct commercial relationship with Europe's leading economy.

The commercial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, but energy analysts estimate the contract could generate cumulative revenues of between €5 and €8 billion for Azerbaijan over its life, depending on prevailing market prices. The deal will be supplied via the Southern Gas Corridor — the TAP-TANAP-SCPx infrastructure that runs from Azerbaijan through Georgia, Turkey, and into Italy, with onward transmission to Germany via European grid interconnections.

Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov described the SEFE deal as a demonstration of Azerbaijan's reliability as a long-term partner. "Germany is Europe's industrial engine, and securing a supply relationship with its leading energy trader validates our position as a tier-one supplier to the European market," he said. SOCAR's gas export revenues for the first two months of 2026 are already tracking significantly ahead of the same period in 2025, according to Trend.Az.

The deal strengthens Germany's energy security architecture at a critical juncture. Berlin has been under pressure from industry groups to secure adequate gas supply ahead of the 2026-27 winter season, following a tighter-than-expected 2025-26 storage cycle. SOCAR's volumes provide a degree of supply certainty that complements Germany's growing LNG import capacity from terminals at Wilhelmshaven, Lubmin, and Brunsbüttel.

For the Southern Gas Corridor system, the SEFE agreement adds commercial depth to an infrastructure asset that was originally sized primarily for Italian and Balkan markets. As reported by Energies Media, Azerbaijan has also begun supplying gas to Austria, further extending its European distribution footprint. The corridor's expanding customer base strengthens the case for the TAP capacity doubling planned for 2027, which would accommodate additional long-term contracts with Central European buyers.

Industry observers expect the SEFE agreement to be followed by similar deals with gas traders and utilities in France, the Netherlands, and Poland, as SOCAR systematically builds a continental customer base to match its growing production capacity. The company has assigned a dedicated European Commercial Division to pursue these relationships, staffed by senior traders with established networks in all major European gas hubs.
