TotalEnergies has finalized the development plan for the second phase of Azerbaijan's Absheron gas and condensate field in the Caspian Sea, advancing a project that will enhance the country's natural gas production and export capacity to European markets.
The Absheron field, located approximately 100 kilometers offshore in water depths of around 500 meters, represents a significant component of Azerbaijan's strategy to maintain and expand its position as a reliable natural gas supplier, particularly following Europe's efforts to diversify away from Russian energy sources.
According to OilPrice.com, the development plan represents TotalEnergies' continued commitment to Azerbaijan's hydrocarbon sector, where the French company has operated for decades as a key partner in major projects including the Shah Deniz gas field that supplies the Southern Gas Corridor to Europe.
Phase Two of Absheron is designed to boost production from the field, which began operations in its initial phase in recent years. The expansion comes at a strategic moment as European demand for non-Russian natural gas remains elevated and Azerbaijan seeks to capitalize on its position as a bridge between Caspian energy resources and European markets.
The project aligns with Azerbaijan's dual strategy of maximizing revenue from existing hydrocarbon assets while simultaneously investing in renewable energy infrastructure. Natural gas revenues provide critical funding for the government's economic diversification initiatives and the ambitious renewable energy targets of 6 gigawatts by 2030.
