SOCAR Taps SLB to Revamp Key Caspian Sea Platforms in Production Boost Drive

Azerbaijan's state energy company SOCAR has selected oilfield services giant SLB — formerly Schlumberger — to undertake a comprehensive revamp of two key Caspian Sea oil production platforms, underscoring Baku's determination to sustain and grow its upstream production capacity as the country navigates the global energy transition.

The partnership involves technical overhauls of two offshore platforms among the older facilities in Azerbaijan's Caspian infrastructure. SLB will deploy its latest well intervention, production optimization, and digital monitoring technologies to extend the productive life of the assets and improve recovery rates from the reservoirs they are connected to.

SOCAR's decision to bring in SLB reflects a broader strategy of deploying world-class technical expertise to maximize value from mature Caspian assets. While attention has focused on newer developments — including the Absheron gas field and the Karabakh oil field operated by BP — a significant share of Azerbaijan's daily production still comes from aging infrastructure that requires intensive maintenance and technical upgrading.

Industry analysts estimate that well-executed platform overhauls on mature Caspian fields can restore production rates by 15–25 percent compared to pre-intervention levels, with improvements sustained for several years. For SOCAR, any meaningful increase in output directly translates to higher state revenues and greater flexibility in managing export commitments to European buyers.

SLB brings a long track record in the Caspian region, having worked alongside BP and SOCAR on multiple projects since the 1990s. The company's digital oilfield technologies — including AI-powered production optimization systems — will be deployed as part of the platform revamp, reflecting the increasing role of data analytics and machine learning in modern upstream operations.

The contract comes as Azerbaijan's oil production faces structural headwinds. ACG field output, while stabilized by BP's new production platform, has been on a long-run declining trend as the reservoir matures. Maintaining aggregate production above 600,000 barrels per day requires ongoing technical intervention across the portfolio, making the SOCAR-SLB program a strategically important element of Azerbaijan's production management plan.

SOCAR has also been expanding its downstream and trading operations internationally, with assets in Georgia, Turkey, Switzerland, and Romania. But the company's financial foundation remains its Caspian upstream business. More details on the project scope and timeline are expected to be disclosed through industry publications covering Caspian energy developments. The initiative reinforces the view that Azerbaijan's economic transformation will continue to be underpinned by strategic investment in its core energy assets for the foreseeable future.
