ADB holds Azerbaijan's 2026 growth forecast at 2% amid regional caution

The Asian Development Bank has held its economic growth forecast for Azerbaijan at 2.0 percent for 2026, unchanged from its April outlook, according to the bank's latest update. Growth is expected to ease slightly to 1.8 percent in 2027.

The ADB left its projections unchanged not only for Azerbaijan but across the region — including Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan — signalling a steady if unspectacular outlook for the wider Caucasus and Central Asia. For Azerbaijan, a 2 percent trajectory reflects the ceiling of an economy still anchored by mature oil and gas output, where headline expansion is constrained by declining legacy hydrocarbon volumes.

The modest forecast sharpens the stakes of Azerbaijan's diversification agenda. Non-oil activity — from renewables and logistics to the trade corridors linking the Caspian to Europe — is where policymakers are betting future growth will come from, even as this year's headline figure stays anchored near 2 percent.

Steady growth paired with a formidable fiscal buffer — strategic reserves near $85.8 billion — gives Baku room to invest through the cycle rather than retrench, a position many of its regional peers would envy.
