TAP Pipeline Completes Expansion Delivering Azerbaijani Gas to Germany

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), the European leg of the Southern Gas Corridor, has completed a major capacity expansion and begun delivering Azerbaijani natural gas to Germany and Austria for the first time, marking a significant milestone in Europe's efforts to diversify its energy supply away from Russian sources.

The expansion added 1.2 billion cubic meters per year of long-term capacity, achieved through the installation of a new 15-megawatt compressor unit at the Kipoi compressor station near the Greek-Turkish border. The upgrade, which commenced in January 2024, was completed ahead of schedule, on budget, and without interrupting ongoing gas flows, according to TAP AG.

Azerbaijan began exporting natural gas to Austria and Germany via the expanded pipeline in January 2026, extending the reach of Caspian gas beyond its traditional Southern European markets in Italy, Greece, and Bulgaria. The milestone underscores Azerbaijan's growing role as a strategic energy supplier to the European continent.

The Southern Gas Corridor, which stretches 3,500 kilometers from the Shah Deniz field in the Caspian Sea through Turkey and into Europe, has delivered a cumulative 50 billion cubic meters of natural gas to European markets since operations began. In the first two months of 2026 alone, Azerbaijan exported 4.38 billion cubic meters of natural gas worth $1.28 billion.

The expansion is particularly significant for Central and Eastern European countries, which now face tighter supply conditions following the expiration of Russian gas transit contracts through Ukraine. These nations have become increasingly dependent on supplies from Norway, the Southern Gas Corridor, and coastal LNG facilities.

Industry analysts note that further expansion of the TAP system remains technically feasible, with the pipeline designed to accommodate future capacity increases to meet growing European demand. Azerbaijan's state energy company SOCAR continues to invest in upstream production to support expanded export commitments, with output projected at over 550,000 barrels per day equivalent in Q1 2026, according to Trend News Agency.
