Azerbaijan Wind Farms Generate 141 Million Kilowatt-Hours in First Two Months of 2026

Azerbaijan's wind energy sector generated 141.6 million kilowatt-hours of electricity during January and February 2026, marking significant progress in the country's renewable energy buildout. Simultaneously, Azerbaijan exported 72.2 million kilowatt-hours of electricity to regional markets during the same period, establishing the country as an emerging net electricity exporter.

The wind generation figures reflect the coming online of new capacity installed as part of Azerbaijan's post-COP29 renewable energy commitments. The country has set a target of generating 30 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, and the early 2026 data suggests the trajectory is broadly on track.

SOCAR Green, the renewable energy subsidiary of the state oil company, has been leading the charge with hybrid renewable projects combining wind, solar, and battery storage. The company's strategy focuses on deploying utility-scale projects in the Absheron Peninsula and the Caspian coastal zone, where wind resources are among the strongest in the region.

The electricity exports are particularly notable in the context of the Caspian-Black Sea-Europe green energy corridor, which envisions submarine cables carrying renewable electricity from Azerbaijan through Georgia to European markets. The fact that Azerbaijan is already a net electricity exporter — albeit at modest volumes — provides early validation of the corridor concept.

International partners are supporting the buildout. TotalEnergies and Masdar agreed in early 2026 to form a $2.2 billion joint venture to build solar, wind, and battery storage projects across nine countries including Azerbaijan. The World Economic Forum has highlighted Azerbaijan's role as a test case for how traditional energy producers can lead green transitions rather than resist them.

Energy analysts project Azerbaijan's total renewable capacity to reach 2 GW by the end of 2027, up from approximately 800 MW at the start of 2026. The combination of strong wind resources, international investment partnerships, and strategic transit positioning makes Azerbaijan increasingly competitive in the emerging global green energy marketplace.
