Azerbaijan's Exports to UK Surge 16-Fold to $3.5 Billion Over Past Year

Azerbaijan's trade relationship with the United Kingdom has been transformed in the space of a year. Exports to the UK increased 16-fold over the past year to reach $3.476 billion, according to figures reported on August 25, while imports from Britain moved sharply in the opposite direction, falling 73.5 percent to $177.1 million.

The combined effect makes the UK one of Azerbaijan's most important trading partners, accounting for 12.5 percent of the country's total foreign trade, as reported by JAMnews.

Energy Behind the Numbers

The scale and speed of the export jump points to hydrocarbons as the driver. The UK's BP remains the largest foreign investor in Azerbaijan's energy sector and operates the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli oil complex and the Shah Deniz gas field, and shifts in how cargoes are routed and booked between partners can move bilateral trade statistics dramatically. Crude oil and refined products dominate Azerbaijan's export basket, which reached roughly $13.9 billion in the first seven months of the year on the strength of energy shipments.

The collapse in imports from the UK, by contrast, suggests one-off equipment purchases in the prior-year base rather than a structural decline in demand for British goods and services.

A Broader Investment Story

The trade data lands amid a wider pickup in foreign capital flows: Azerbaijan attracted $1.6 billion in foreign investment during the first seven months of 2026, according to Azernews. UK-Azerbaijani commercial ties extend beyond oil and gas into green energy, with BP developing the 240 MW Shafag solar project in the Jabrayil district.

For British buyers, Azerbaijani barrels have become part of the post-2022 rebalancing of European energy supply chains away from Russian crude. Whether the 16-fold export figure marks a new plateau or a statistical peak will depend on how those flows are routed in the second half of the year.
