Azerbaijan-Iran Power Trade Set for Record Summer as Electricity Flows Surge

Azerbaijan is on course to export record volumes of electricity to Iran this summer as surging demand in Iranian industry and infrastructure drives a deepening bilateral power trading relationship—one that analysts describe as a commercially significant energy synergy.

From January through February 2026, Azerbaijan exported 72.2 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, with Iran as a primary recipient. The volumes are expected to accelerate sharply in the summer months as Iranian cooling and industrial loads peak and as Azerbaijan's surplus generation capacity—estimated at approximately 2,000 megawatts—enables it to act as a swing supplier to its southern neighbour.

The electricity trade is built on complementary seasonality. Azerbaijan's hydro and thermal capacity generates relatively consistent output year-round, while Iran's demand spikes significantly in summer. Trend.az reported that bilateral Azerbaijan-Iran energy coordination has accelerated alongside broader diplomatic engagement between Baku and Tehran. The summer of 2026 is projected to record the highest bilateral electricity transfer volumes in the history of the relationship.

For Azerbaijan, the electricity trade complements its gas export strategy. Domestic substitution of natural gas for electricity generation allows Baku to free up gas volumes for the higher-margin European export market via the Southern Gas Corridor. According to Azerbaijan's Ministry of Energy, plans call for 30% of domestic electricity from renewables by 2030, which will progressively expand the surplus available for export as solar and wind capacity comes online.

Looking further ahead, Azerbaijan has been in discussions about developing electricity export capacity toward Europe—a concept that would require new transmission infrastructure across Turkey or Georgia but which has attracted interest from European energy planners. The Iran electricity trade, while temporary in its current form, provides Azerbaijan with a useful commercial outlet for surplus capacity and a diplomatic-economic lever in its relationship with Tehran.
