Azerbaijan's natural gas export network reached 16 countries in early 2026—up from 12 in 2025—as the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline completed its first capacity expansion and two major European economies joined the buyer list for the first time.
Germany and Austria became the latest additions to the Southern Gas Corridor's customer base in January 2026, as TAP completed a 1.2 billion cubic metre per year capacity upgrade that enables higher throughput to Central European markets. The expansion had been in technical development for over two years and marks the first structural increase in TAP's transport capacity since the pipeline's 2020 launch.
In the first quarter of 2026, Azerbaijan produced 12.6 billion cubic metres of natural gas, with 3 bcm exported to Europe. For full-year 2025, total gas exports reached 25.2 bcm—more than half flowing to European Union member states. According to Caspian News, new fields in development in the Caspian basin are expected to further increase Azerbaijan's exportable gas volumes later in the decade, giving Baku additional leverage in long-term supply negotiations with European buyers.
SOCAR has been engaged in discussions with European counterparts to lock in multi-year supply agreements beyond current volumes. With European governments eager to reduce spot market exposure, Azerbaijani supply commitments offer a degree of price and volume certainty the market values. According to the Astana Times, Azerbaijan's gas exports to Europe grew 56% in 2025, a trajectory continuing into 2026.
The 2026 Southern Gas Corridor is expected to transport approximately 12.8 bcm annually, while infrastructure for further expansion is assessed and financed. The addition of Germany and Austria as buyers signals that political will for increasing supply is present, even as capacity limits constrain near-term volume upside. Analysts tracking Caspian energy note that the next phase of SGC growth will depend on upstream field development at Shah Deniz and the Absheron field, both projected to contribute incremental volumes in the 2027-2030 window.
