Azerbaijan Posts $1.7 Billion in Crude Exports in First Two Months of 2026

Azerbaijan exported 3.6 million tonnes of crude oil and petroleum products worth approximately $1.70 billion in January and February 2026, according to official energy data from SOCAR and the State Statistics Committee, as the country maintained production levels against a challenging global price environment.

The Q1 2026 data reflects the enduring centrality of hydrocarbon revenues to Azerbaijan's fiscal position even as Baku pursues an accelerating diversification agenda. Natural gas production reached 12.6 billion cubic metres in the January-March period, with 3 billion cubic metres exported to Europe—figures that underscore the twin-track nature of Azerbaijan's energy export strategy.

Crude oil export volumes are routed primarily through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, which terminates at Turkey's Mediterranean coast and has operated at near-capacity for much of the past decade. CEE Energy News reported that SOFAZ continues to absorb the majority of export proceeds, providing the government with a stabilisation buffer central to Azerbaijan's fiscal architecture. Azerbaijan also exported 72.2 million kilowatt-hours of electricity from January through February 2026.

The data also reveals energy mix shifts. While crude dominates export revenues, natural gas is steadily increasing its share as Southern Gas Corridor infrastructure matures and new Caspian field production comes online. AzerNews analysis characterises Azerbaijan as a core energy supplier in a regional power shift, simultaneously managing supply relationships with Europe, Turkey, Russia, Iran, and East Asian markets—a diversification unusual among hydrocarbon exporters of Azerbaijan's scale.

The renewable energy buildout adds a further strategic dimension. Azerbaijan is constructing utility-scale solar and wind capacity to offset domestic gas consumption and free up additional volumes for export, serving both the green transition agenda and the country's revenue optimisation objectives. For investors monitoring the South Caucasus energy complex, Q1 2026 data reaffirms Azerbaijan's position as the region's dominant hydrocarbon producer.
