ACWA Power Inaugurates Azerbaijan's Largest Wind Farm at 240 Megawatts

Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power has inaugurated Azerbaijan's largest wind power facility, a 240-megawatt wind station that represents a landmark achievement in the Caspian nation's renewable energy transition. The facility, located in the Khizi-Absheron region, is the country's most significant single renewable energy installation to date and provides a concrete demonstration of Azerbaijan's ability to attract and execute major international clean energy projects.

President Ilham Aliyev presided over the inauguration ceremony, noting that Azerbaijan is achieving strong results in its transition toward green energy. The 240-megawatt facility will contribute meaningfully to the national grid, generating enough clean electricity to power approximately 300,000 households and displacing significant quantities of natural gas currently used for domestic electricity generation.

"This wind station is proof that Azerbaijan's energy transition is not just a plan on paper — it is happening on the ground," said the ACWA Power project director. "The successful execution of this project demonstrates that international investors can deliver large-scale renewable projects in Azerbaijan efficiently and profitably."

The Caspian News reported that the wind station is part of a broader pipeline of renewable energy projects that Azerbaijan is advancing toward its target of commissioning 6 gigawatts of wind and solar capacity by 2030 and 8 gigawatts by 2032. Additional projects in the pipeline include large-scale solar installations and offshore wind facilities in the Caspian Sea.

ACWA Power's investment in Azerbaijan reflects growing Saudi interest in the Caspian energy market. The Riyadh-based company, which is majority-owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, has a global portfolio exceeding 80 gigawatts of power generation and desalination capacity across multiple countries. The Azerbaijan wind farm adds to ACWA Power's expanding footprint in the former Soviet space.

The inauguration comes as Azerbaijan is simultaneously developing grid modernization infrastructure to support the integration of variable renewable energy sources. Smart grid technology, battery energy storage systems, and a centralized digital command center are all being deployed to ensure that the growing share of renewable generation can be reliably absorbed by the national grid.

International climate and energy organizations have taken note of Azerbaijan's renewable energy progress, particularly following the country's hosting of COP29 in Baku. The commitment to large-scale renewable deployment, combined with investments in green energy corridor infrastructure connecting to European markets, positions Azerbaijan as a country that is seeking to maintain energy export relevance in a decarbonizing global economy.

The Caspian Barrel analysis quoted SOCAR President Rovshan Najaf as emphasizing that Azerbaijan's approach to the energy transition is additive rather than substitutive — the country aims to build a major renewable energy sector while continuing to serve as a reliable hydrocarbon supplier to European and regional markets.
